Friday Fun Fact
I cannot eat a whole 12-inch Subway sandwich. No matter what kind, no matter how hard I try. And I don’t try very often, but more often than I should. Every time I go to Subway, I think of a friend of mine who said, “what kind of man doesn’t eat a whole 12-inch?” It kind of makes me laugh, but then again, I see it as a challenge. A challenge that continues to best me. So I...

11 in 2011
It was suggested, sort of subtly, that we should list our 11 things we want to do in 2011. These are mine, in no particular order. Portion control. Especially Coca-Cola. Jeez, I guzzle that stuff. Be more patient with my kids. I have to remember that the time I’m around them is Their Time, not mine. I’m helping shape the idea of a dad in the lives of three young people. Big...

Write one leaf in which you describe your reasons...
I write because I have too much in my head to keep track of, and it needs to come out. I write because talking sometimes takes too long. I write because creating a character, a scene, a conflict, a world is great power, and great fun. I love words. I love trying to describe the imagery I engender in my mind. I like to try to relate to someone, something. I write because I’m not a musician,...

just changed my first cloth diaper
No, it wasn’t easy. Yes, it took me half an hour. I suck at this. But I’ll get better.
frageelay asked: Unless it absolutely makes my ears bleed, I'll give anything someone recs the three-listen rule. I think some works take time to warm to.
Somewhat related: I've found that I end up loving some deep cut (oh God my age is showing, isn't it?) far more than the catchy hook that first drew me in to a release.

I just made a list of things I love
so I have to follow it up with something I hate. Namely, stepping on tiny pieces of cat food on the hardwood floor, so they embed themselves in my foot, and the ensuing fruitless dance to shake them free.

10 Favorite Albums of 2010
10. Maximum Balloon by Maximum Balloon This debut is funky, danceable, and infectious, featuring guest lead vocalists like David Byrne, Little Dragon, and Karen O. taking turns singing some cool, memorable songs. David Andrew Sitek’s formula worked so well, this album landed in the tenth spot. 9. Broken Bells by Broken Bells Danger Mouse joined up with James Mercer and together they turned...

one of the coolest girls I know in real life
saw me walking toward her and quickly zipped up her sweater, past her low-cut shirt, and up to her neck, even before she said hi. I stopped in my tracks. I didn’t know whether to be shocked or flattered. I almost said, “you’re way more than cute boobs to me!” But I think that might have made an awkward situation even more awkward. I thought I should tell her that I...

on the other hand
I can name every song on every INXS album in order, starting with the self-titled debut, and going up through Elegantly Wasted, and probably at least sing you the chorus, if not the whole thing. Right now, The Swing is playing. It’s my winter album from them. And not just because the cover is white.

the real question:
How many people are going to post “New Year’s Day” by U2 on New Year’s Day? I guess if I have to hear it once a year… might as well be then.

Best Albums of 2010, The Runners Up
These are the ten albums that didn’t quite make my top ten of 2010. I’m not putting them in any kind of order. They all could have been in the mix for the best of the year. Any one of them. They are the best of the rest. Transference by Spoon Another year, another solid Spoon album. As a friend of mine said, it’s so good and so recognizable as Spoon you almost shrug it off. That...

When it snows like this, and the driving is nasty, and it feels like it’s getting dark even in the middle of day, the ride to and from work can be long and dangerous. Or… it can be an adventure! I love this feeling, actually. The feeling of being enveloped in white, cavernous snow, trapped inside my vehicle, a little oasis of heat and light and sound shuttling through the darkness. I get...

2010 is almost over
and I’ve nearly achieved my goal. I managed to keep my nipples off the internet for another whole year. I hope to have the same success in 2011. Being on Tumblr will make that more difficult, I know. Wish me luck!

Things I learned this Christmas
The inventor of the Allen wrench was either brilliant, or a masochist. Barbies aren’t nearly as naked as they used to be without their clothes. Electronic devices now outnumber humans in our household, 2:1. I need to buy more things to make the things we got work. We all received way more than we deserved. Hope everyone had the same kind of holiday.

I could listen to Leo Kottke all day
and as a matter of fact, I did. I played album after album of his stuff. Nobody finger-picks like him, he’s a maniac. A completely chill, subdued maniac.

naughty (not nice)
We lay together in the gray of early morning, huddled under the cozy blankets on our bed and beneath the sky light that was half covered in snow. I reached around her waist, clasping my hands against her warm body. She eased into my gentle embrace, then turned toward me. “For the last couple nights, you’ve been a total fucking asshole, and now this? I don’t think so.” No...

I just attempted a serious and extended Elvis Costello impression that left the office very, very quiet.

one more thing about songs and words
If you’re in a band, and you choose to cover a song, you might want to get the lyrics right.
For example, Mark James wrote this in “Hooked on a Feeling”, originally sung by BJ Thomas: I got it bad for you, girl, but I don’t need no cure. I’ll just stay addicted and hope I can endure.
Blue Swede, along with adding the strange refrain of “ooga chucka”,...

I get irate
when I hear a song that has unnecessary, contradictory filler lyrics.
Example: “oh, yeah, baby, no, no, no… oh yeah.” Stop singing. Go back, and write real lyrics. Start again. Thank you.

don’t go back in Tumblr time, don’t scroll down and read every post until you find out where you left off, don’t DO that, you follow too many people, this could take forever…

Snatch
It was brutal, wicked cold. I was visiting friends in Portland, having driven through a snowstorm to get there. We arrived, drank heartily, and slept. The next day was nicer, no snow, but icy, barren and frigid. Still, we ventured outside because we were close to the one theater in the state that was showing Guy Ritchie’s Snatch. Based on the success of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels,...

conversation with four year old daughter moments...
“Dad, what kind of cereal do we have?”
“Cocoa Puffs, Apple Jacks, and Corn Pops.”
“What are Corn Pops?”
“They’re… yellow.”
Way to lay on the selling points, Dad. Must have more coffee.
