Groundhog Day

My kids have discovered DVR. Every morning, my eldest wakes up and watches the thing she watched the day before. I can recite every line of the cast of Victorious doing The Breakfast Bunch, an episode based on the movie, The Breakfast Club. The kids don’t get the references. They are hilarious, even after four times. I’ll probably have to see it another four times. It’s starting to feel like Groundhog Day around here.

Which got me thinking.

Tim Duncan, San Antonio Spurs captain, has been called Groundhog Day. He gives you the same thing, every day. He’s been good for a double-double nearly every night for most of his career. But now, he’s getting old. He’s 35, which in basketball years, is 106. He’s my age. So he sits out fourth quarters, sometimes even in close games, mostly in blowouts. He misses second nights of back to backs. His averages are down across the board. But last night, he had a throwback night to come from behind and beat Houston and earn a split with the Rockets this season.

I don’t know why I’m writing this. Maybe because at 35, I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface of the purpose for my life, and his career is nearly over.

I don’t care what that rodent sees or doesn’t see. Every day is a new day.
