more good news and potty talk

I helped potty train two girls. It made a modicum of sense. Gotta go number 1? Sit down. Gotta go number 2? Sit down. Now, we have a son. And even though he’s got a bunch of health problems, I really want him to feel like like a little boy, because, first and foremost, he is a little boy. But I’ve never potty trained a boy before, and he can’t stand for very long on his own yet, and let’s not even get into the bowel explosions that are a result of his short gut syndrome.

But, for the past two days, he’s peed on the potty twice. And that’s pretty exciting. He gets it. We weren’t sure he would. We actually had a night nurse ask us if we were even going to bother to potty train him. We looked at her like she was nuts and said of course. She muttered something about his bowel perforation and did a lot of backtracking. Whatever. He might not get it, but of course we’re going to try.

Anyway, he’s getting the hang of it. My middle daughter immediately pointed out that he was peeing like a girl. I told her you have to start somewhere. And he pees like a very cleanly, much appreciated boy.

Then he wanted high fives and smooches all around. When it was my middle daughter’s turn for a hand slap and a kiss, she took the five, but declined the kiss. She said she had no problems kissing ladies, but boys are out of the question. So, that looks like it’s gonna be a whole other thing.
